Bord Iascaigh Mhara/BIM is seeking applications from suitably qualified and experienced candidates for the post of: Fisheries Conservation Technologist. Based at BIM’s Galway Office, the Fisheries Conservation Technologist is part of the Fisheries Conservation team. The remit of the team is to work closely with the Irish Fishing Industry to reduce environmental impacts of fishing gears and improve fishery sustainability. Reporting directly to the Fisheries Conservation Manager, the Fisheries Conservation Technologist will assist the team in developing technical solutions which reduce unwanted catches of small or quota limited species and environmental impacts of fishing gears. The work involves extensive sea going gear trials, data collection, analysis, reporting and consultation with industry, state bodies and the broader public. The successful candidate will develop projects to reduce unwanted catches and address landing obligation requirements. They will co-ordinate and participate in gear trials on board Irish commercial fishing vessels, and liaise with international gear technology researchers and working groups to ensure best practice. They will also lead promotion of BIM’s Fisheries Conservation work to stakeholders and the broader public.
